15 Amazing Benefits of Black Seed Oil

For thousands of years people have turned to black seed oil for a variety of skin and health conditions. There are so many incredible health benefits to black seed oil that it has been a staple in natural health for longer than any of us have been around. That tells you something! Before we get too deep into the benefits of black seed oil, let me introduce you to it a bit further.

Black seed oil comes from the seeds found in the Nigella Sativa plant.  This plant grows in Eastern Europe, Western Asia and the Middle East. The black seeds are often referred to as black caraway, black cumin or black onion seeds. The seeds from the Nigella Sativa plant has been a natural remedy for centuries. It can be used in cooking and baking as well as in capsules or oils. One of the key components to black seed oil is the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound called Thymoquinone. This compound has garnered the attention of modern medicine, and it has been tested for its efficacy against numerous diseases, including cancer with very promising results.

Raw, high-quality Black seed oil is one of the best ways to incorporate this ‘miracle herb’ into your daily diet. You can take it with almost any drink or take a teaspoon and chase it with a bit of honey. Incorporating it into smoothies, soups or drizzling it over your lunch-time salad are other ways you can get your daily dose. The taste is certainly pungent, but the benefits are worth it!

There are so many health, skin, daily diet benefits to black seed oil. I definitely can’t capture all of them in one blog post! Today I’ll share with you 15 amazing health benefits and side effects of using black seed oil.

  • Hair Hydration
  • Hair oils are wildly popular due to their ability to add moisture and shine to the hair almost instantly. Using black seed oil is a pure, natural way to hydrate your hair and many use it for the purpose of improving the overall health of their hair. Using it internally can help with hair growth and skin moisture.

  • Eczema
  • In 2013, a study was conducted to compare the therapeutic benefits of black seed oil compared to prescription medicine. The results were positive and demonstrated how black seed oil can reduce the severity of Eczema significantly. If you’re looking for a natural way to treat eczema, you should definitely try black seed oil!

  • Acne
  • Studies on the efficacy of black seed oil have suggested that antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits of using black seed oil can improve acne. More specifically, the study determined that 58% reported they had a ‘good’ response and 35% reported a ‘moderate’ response to their treatment. That means 93% of participants noticed a difference in their acne with the use of black seed oil, and the difference ranged from moderate to good.

  • Weight Loss
  • While research is still limited, many experts believe black seed oil is an effective natural remedy to support weight loss. In one study, black seed oil was proven to reduce risk factors in women who are obese. The study was 8-weeks long. The women were divided into two groups. One group consumed black seed oil while on a low-calorie diet, the other group were part of the control group and only had a placebo while also following the same low-calorie diet. Those that took black seed oil noticed more weight loss than those that did not.

  • Fertility
  • For years, cultures around the world have been using black seed oil as a natural remedy for infertility. There is research to support this use, and many claims suggest that it’s a natural way to improve fertility in men. A placebo-controlled clinical trial on men with abnormal sperm and infertility, had very promising results. The study found that black seed oil can effectively improve sperm movement, increase sperm count and semen volume thereby improving fertility.

  • Antifungal
  • Black seed oil has been proven through several research studies to have antifungal properties, and studies suggest that it is a suitable skin treatment for many different infections affecting the body. In 1991, a study was carried out which demonstrated the inhibitory effect of diethyl-ether extract found in the N. Sativa plant. The study demonstrated the extract of N. Sativa was able to inhibit the growth of Candida yeast. Though this study was on animals, researchers believe the effect could also be found on humans.  Thymoquinone was also found to inhibit other fungal infections successfully, and sometimes even more effectively than prescription medications.

  • Anticancer
  • The research proving the anticancer benefits of black seed oil is favorable. The recent studies completed have been on cancer cells themselves rather than humans, so it is still in the early stages of development. However, the studies demonstrated the effectiveness of thymoquinone which is found in black seed oil.  Based on these studies, researchers saw that black seed oil can successfully influence programmed cell death, or apoptosis, in different types of cancer cells. As the study is still in the early stages and more research is needed, researchers do not fully understand how effective it will be in humans. The cell types included in this study were those of brain cancer, breast cancer and leukemia.

Another study was completed with lab rats. These studies showed that black seed oil can effectively reduce the size of tumors. Furthermore, the black seed oil also may help to reduce the tissue damaging effects of radiation that is often used to treat cancer. Again, the studies have not yet been completed on humans but so far the results show great potential!  Black seed oil shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medically assigned cancer treatments until further research is completed.

  • Liver and Kidney Function
  •  Liver and Kidney function is so crucial to our overall health and well-being.  Researchers have been studying how black seed oil can contribute and promote healthy liver and kidney function. At this time, studies have not yet been completed on humans, but a 2013 study on rats saw that black seed oil may reduce complications caused by liver and kidney disease complications. It also saw that black seed oil may improve these organ structures.

  • Diabetes
  • Diabetes research has suggested that black seed oil may help support and improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Clinic trials are still needed, but the initial review published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine in 2015 suggested the benefit of black seed oil was evident and there was benefits of use for people with diabetes. A subsequent study in 2017 confirmed this result.

  • Reducing Cholesterol
  • Over the span of 8 weeks, women who were identified to be overweight (based on BMI) and lived a sedentary lifestyle were studied. The women participated in aerobic exercise while half used black seed oil, and the other half did not. Those who combined aerobic exercise with black seed oil were found to have lower cholesterol levels than those who did not use black seed oil.

  • Decreasing Asthma Symptoms
  •  Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of black seed oil, researchers believe black seed oil can be an effective natural remedy to help decrease symptoms of asthma.  In 2017, a study published found that people who took black seed oil capsules reported a decrease in asthma symptoms, compared to those who took a placebo. More research is being carried out but for now, evidence suggests it may be an effective remedy for asthma symptoms.

  • Reducing Stomach Pain
  • If you suffer from stomach pain or cramping, finding a natural solution can be life changing. Black seed oil has been reported to assist with bloating, ulcers, stomach cramping and gas as well as nausea. Incorporating black seed oil into your diet may help with tummy troubles.

  • Lowering High Blood Pressure
  • High blood pressure is a common health ailment today. The causes are debatable and different for each person, but early research has shown that taking black seed oil for 8 weeks has been shown to lower high blood pressure in adults experiencing mild, consistent elevation.

  • Wound Healing
  • Limiting bacteria and creating new, healthy skin is the key to wound healing. Black seed oil has been proven to help with both elements, making it a natural remedy to support successful healing of skin. Topical application of black seed oil has been shown to reduce inflammation and the presence of bacteria to aid in wound healing.

  • Nasal Inflammation
  • Seasonal allergy sufferers have reported an improvement in symptoms when using black seed oil.  For anyone with allergies this a huge benefit as allergies can have such a negative effect on our wellbeing! In a 2011 study (published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology), black seed oil was found to reduce nasal inflammation including congestion, itchiness, running nose, and sneezing after only two weeks of supplementing. Black seed oil shows promise in the treatment of allergies.  Another study was carried out in 2018, which showed some improvement in the symptoms of sinusitis – likely due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant analgesic effects.
